Humble Ben Van Meter

Greetings! You have stumbled onto the website of Humble Ben Van Meter who had his 15 minutes of underground fame in San Francisco during the legendary sixties as a creator of underground, experimental art films and light shows. This site will contain my memoirs of the time and place (San Francisco in the sixties) and my experiences there including my Light Show Daze spent working for Bill Graham at the Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helm’s Family Dog at the Avalon Ballroom. My Lightshow was known as The North American Ibis Alchemical Company and was the house light show for the Avalon for about 14 months which included the “Summer of Love.”

“What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been”

My life has led me on a number of journeys, all karmically beneficial I hope. Over the years I have occasionally put fingers to the keyboard to record my memories and musings of those days of youthful exuberance and unrealistic optimism. I write about several of my shorter films and offer a DVD for sale, “Rebirth of A Nation” which includes the longer ones also.

I also intend to post a passel of photographic stills that I made during that time and were used in the light shows. The internal links to the left are to the various chapters in my memoirs. I will also refer to a number of books that have been important to me or at least I have found interesting and helpful and provide links for my readers to follow if you are interested in purchasing them.
